Emerald Cruises: what it is, how it works, and what to expect
Cruise guide · Updated 2026 · Premium · River and ocean · Star-Ships · Luxury yachts · Pool-to-cinema · EmeraldACTIVE · Mediterranean · Mekong
Emerald Cruises occupies a specific and well-defined space in the travel market: the accessible premium tier below its parent brand Scenic, offering a contemporary luxury experience on European rivers and warm-water oceans without the ultra-luxury pricing or the expedition complexity.
Founded in 2013 and first sailing in 2014, Emerald built its reputation on innovative river ships before expanding into ocean yachting in 2022. In 2026 it operates a combined fleet of river Star-Ships and boutique ocean yachts, with three more yachts arriving by 2028 and two new river ships also launching within the next two years.
It is the faster-growing and more accessible of the two Scenic Group brands, and for many first-time river cruisers or warm-water yacht travellers, it represents the most compelling entry point to premium small-ship travel.
This guide covers Emerald Cruises’ founding and relationship with Scenic Group, the river Star-Ship fleet and its signature features, the ocean yacht programme, what is included across both products, stateroom categories, the excursion structure, the itinerary range, and how Emerald compares to alternatives in both the river and ocean segments.

A brief history of Emerald Cruises
Emerald Cruises was created in 2013 by Glen Moroney, the Australian entrepreneur who founded Scenic Group in 1986. Moroney had built Scenic into the flagship ultra-luxury river cruise brand in Europe and recognised that a substantial portion of the premium travel market wanted a similar product at a more accessible price point, with a more contemporary design aesthetic and less formal atmosphere. He established Emerald Waterways as the solution: a sister brand sharing Scenic’s operational infrastructure, shipbuilding relationships, and commitment to small-ship quality, but positioned one tier below in price and one step more relaxed in tone.
The first Emerald Star-Ship, Emerald Sky, was christened in Amsterdam in April 2014 by the model and style icon Twiggy, establishing from launch a brand identity that was recognisably premium but more playful and contemporary than its Scenic parent. Emerald Star joined the fleet shortly after, followed by Emerald Sun and Emerald Dawn in 2015, and successive ships through the decade. By 2019 the fleet had expanded to include Emerald Harmony on the Mekong River, the brand’s first deployment outside Europe. In 2020, the Emerald Waterways and Emerald Yacht Cruises sub-brands were consolidated under the single Emerald Cruises name, and the ocean programme was formally launched.
The first ocean yacht, Emerald Azzurra, welcomed guests in March 2022 and was followed by the nearly identical Emerald Sakara in August 2023. The third yacht, Emerald Kaia, launches in April 2026, with Emerald Raiya arriving in late 2027 and Emerald Xara in 2028, expanding the ocean fleet to five yachts. On the river side, Emerald Astra joins the Rhine, Main, and Danube routes in May 2026, and Emerald Lumi, the brand’s first purpose-built ship for the Seine, launches in 2027.
Emerald Cruises is headquartered in Zug, Switzerland, and operates as a fully owned subsidiary of Scenic Group alongside Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours. It is the more accessible, more contemporary, and more rapidly expanding of the two brands.
The river Star-Ships: nine ships, seven waterways
Emerald currently operates nine river Star-Ships across European rivers and the Mekong, with a tenth, Emerald Astra, launching in May 2026 on the Rhine, Main, and Danube.
The European fleet sails seven rivers: the Rhine, Main, Danube, Moselle, Rhône, Saône, and Douro. Each Star-Ship carries between 168 and 180 guests and is built to a consistent design language that prioritises natural light, contemporary minimalism, and a set of onboard innovations that have made Emerald one of the most recognised names in European river cruising.
The ship most frequently cited as Emerald’s signature innovation is the heated pool that converts into an evening cinema. Located at the stern on a retractable-roof deck, the pool operates with a glass roof that opens in warm weather and closes when it rains. In the evening, the pool is covered with a floor, seating is arranged around a screen, and the space transforms into an indoor cinema showing first-run films. It is the most distinctive single feature on any European river ship and one that no competitor has replicated at the same scale.
The Sky Deck at the top of each ship is a traditional feature of river cruise Star-Ships, providing open-air lounging and the highest vantage point for scenic viewing. The Horizon Bar and Lounge serves as the social hub, with large windows and a bar that transitions from daytime to evening use. The Reflections Restaurant is the main dining venue, serving daily-changing menus drawing on regional ingredients and destination-inspired cooking.
The opening balcony suites, the innovation Scenic Group pioneered when it first built its own river ships in 2007, are present across the premium cabin categories on all Star-Ships: a full-height glass wall that opens at waist level, converting the cabin into an indoor balcony with unobstructed views of the passing riverbank. This feature, now standard on Emerald’s upper cabin categories, remains one of the most appealing aspects of the Star-Ship experience for guests who want proximity to the landscape without the draft of a true outdoor balcony.
The tenth Star-Ship, Emerald Astra, launching in May 2026, introduces several improvements to the class based on a decade of guest feedback, including enhanced stateroom design and updated public spaces. It will sail the Rhine, Main, and Danube routes.
Emerald Harmony is the sole Mekong Star-Ship, carrying 68 guests between Ho Chi Minh City and Siem Reap across 8-day and 10-day itineraries. Its smaller size allows access to minor tributaries and anchorages not reachable by the larger European fleet, and the staff-to-guest ratio approaches 1:2.
The ocean yachts: Azzurra, Sakara, Kaia, and beyond
The ocean yacht programme launched in 2022 with Emerald Azzurra and has grown rapidly. Two sister ships are already in service and a third launches in April 2026, with two more arriving before 2028. All five yachts share the same fundamental design philosophy: a 100 to 128-guest boutique superyacht with a marina platform, an infinity pool, a wellness area, open seating dining, and a set of included excursions, all at a price point that sits between mainstream small-ship cruising and ultra-luxury lines like Silversea or Seabourn.
Emerald Azzurra launched in March 2022 and carries 100 guests in 50 staterooms across seven categories. She is 110 metres long with an instantly recognisable superyacht silhouette: a long, elegant bow, clean exterior lines, and a profile that is closer to a private vessel than a cruise ship. The interior is contemporary boutique in aesthetic, with Missoni Home textiles, Moooi furniture, and a palette of charcoal, cream, and taupe accented with chrome and glass. She sails the Adriatic, Mediterranean, Caribbean, Seychelles, and Indian Ocean.
Emerald Sakara launched in August 2023 as the nearly identical sister ship, also carrying 100 guests in 50 staterooms. Her itinerary programme mirrors Azzurra’s across the same destination regions, allowing the two ships to be deployed simultaneously for complementary seasonal schedules.
Emerald Kaia launches in April 2026 with an inaugural season through Cyprus, Greece, and Turkey, followed by a summer programme covering Italy, Montenegro, Albania, Croatia, and the Greek Islands, and a December 2026 repositioning to the Seychelles for the 2026 to 2027 winter season. She carries 128 guests, slightly larger than her sister ships, and incorporates improvements based on guest feedback from Azzurra and Sakara, including an expanded Sky Deck with private cabanas and a refined wellness area. She was floated out at the shipyard in Halong Bay, Vietnam, in November 2025.
Emerald Raiya and Emerald Xara follow in 2027 and 2028 respectively, each also carrying 128 guests, expanding the yacht fleet to five ships and introducing Emerald’s first ocean presence in Asia.
The defining physical feature across all ocean yachts is the Marina Platform, a stern-level platform that lowers to the waterline at anchor, allowing guests direct access to the sea for swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, and snorkelling. The marina eliminates the barrier between the ship and the water that characterises most ocean vessels and creates an intimacy with the destination that has become the signature of the Emerald ocean experience.

Stateroom categories
River Star-Ships
The cabin hierarchy on European Star-Ships is designed around the opening balcony concept, with the premium tiers benefiting from the signature full-height opening glass wall.
Emerald Staterooms are the entry category, with a large fixed picture window rather than an opening balcony. They are situated on the lower decks and offer a comfortable, well-appointed cabin at the most accessible price point. Standard Emerald Staterooms run approximately 160 to 170 square feet.
Panorama Balcony Suites introduce the opening balcony, a full-height glass wall that opens at waist level, transforming the cabin into an indoor terrace. This is the most popular and most characteristic Emerald river cabin category and the one that defines the experience for most returning guests. Approximately 200 to 210 square feet.
Grand Balcony Suites are larger versions of the Panorama Balcony with additional seating and more generous dimensions. Available on the uppermost cabin decks.
Owner’s One-Bedroom Suites are the flagship category on the European Star-Ships: a separate bedroom and living area with the full opening balcony, butler-style service elements, and the largest footprint available on the river fleet.
On Emerald Harmony (Mekong), staterooms range from 180 to 240 square feet and all feature large fixed windows with views of the river.
Ocean yachts
Oceanview Staterooms are the six entry-level cabins on each yacht, located on the lower deck with large picture windows rather than balconies. They offer the full Emerald ocean experience at the most accessible price point and are a genuinely good-value option for guests who spend most of their day off the ship exploring.
Balcony Suites are the main category, comprising the majority of cabins on each yacht. These are private staterooms with a private balcony, floor-to-ceiling windows, and the full suite of onboard amenities. They range from approximately 295 to 315 square feet on Azzurra and Sakara.
Deluxe Balcony Suites are two per yacht, positioned on the Pool Deck with a private balcony and additional square footage at approximately 382 to 403 square feet.
Terrace Suites face aft and feature an oversized private terrace, significantly larger than the standard balcony, with room for a day bed, lounger, and dining table. Running approximately 648 to 669 square feet including the terrace, they represent the best outdoor space on the yacht for guests who want to use their private exterior area extensively.
Yacht Suites are positioned aft on the Observation Deck with a large private terrace, a walk-in wardrobe, a welcome bottle of champagne, pre-stocked mini-bar, and laundry service. Approximately 700 to 721 square feet including terrace.
Owner’s Suites are the two largest accommodations on each yacht at approximately 1,162 to 1,192 square feet including the private terrace. They include a separate bedroom and lounge area, a walk-in wardrobe, a restocked complimentary mini-bar, pre-dinner canapés, room service during meal times, and four items laundered daily. They are the most private and spacious option on the fleet and produce an experience noticeably closer to ultra-luxury than the standard cabin categories.
The excursion programme: EmeraldDISCOVERY, EmeraldPLUS, EmeraldACTIVE
One of Emerald’s most consistently praised features across both the river and ocean products is the structured excursion programme, which provides an included activity in virtually every port and organises those activities into a tiered system that allows guests to choose the style of exploration that suits them each day.
EmeraldDISCOVERY
EmeraldDISCOVERY excursions are the standard included tour in each port: a guided experience covering the destination’s main cultural and historical highlights, led by a local English-speaking guide. These are the equivalent of what most river cruise lines include as standard, and Emerald executes them with consistent quality.
EmeraldPLUS
EmeraldPLUS excursions are included cultural immersion experiences that go beyond the standard sightseeing tour. They provide access to local homes, artisan workshops, private vineyard visits, cooking demonstrations with local families, or performances and ceremonies not typically available through a standard tourist itinerary. EmeraldPLUS is one of the features most frequently cited by first-time Emerald guests as unexpectedly impressive for the price tier.
EmeraldACTIVE
EmeraldACTIVE excursions are the physically engaged alternative: guided bike rides through vineyards, hiking trails alongside the river, canoeing on tributaries, or other active options in destinations where the landscape invites movement. All EmeraldACTIVE options are included in the fare and represent Emerald’s most direct answer to guests who find standard city tours passive.
DiscoverMORE excursions are optional, available at an additional charge, and typically involve specialist access, premium experiences, or more time-intensive programmes that go beyond what can be practically included for all guests. Examples include private cooking classes in historic homes, exclusive winery dinners, or access to collections and institutions not open to standard tour groups.
How Emerald compares to other lines
Emerald Cruises
Best for: Contemporary premium river and boutique ocean travel at a more accessible price than Scenic, with the most innovative river ship design on the market, an excellent three-tier included excursion programme, and warm-water ocean yachting without expedition complexity
The pool-to-cinema concept is unmatched in river cruising. The EmeraldPLUS cultural immersion excursions are included, not charged separately. The ocean yachts offer marina platform access, a boutique hotel aesthetic, and a strong included excursion programme. Premium spirits and cocktails are not included in the base fare on either product.
Scenic Luxury Cruises
Best for: Full all-inclusive including premium spirits, butler service on all river cabins, and the Discovery Yacht expedition product with helicopters and submarine
Scenic is the premium tier above Emerald within the same group. On rivers, Scenic’s Space Ships offer a more formally all-inclusive product including premium spirits in the base fare and butler service across all cabins. On ocean, Scenic Eclipse and Eclipse II are Polar Class 6 expedition Discovery Yachts at 228 guests with a fundamentally different product profile. The price difference between Emerald and Scenic reflects these distinctions concretely.
Viking Ocean and River
Best for: Adults-only atmosphere, destination-focused travel with one shore excursion per port included, and the most curated cultural enrichment programme on the river market
Viking is the most direct competitor to Emerald on European rivers. Both operate similarly sized ships, include excursions, and have strong culinary programmes. Viking’s base fare now charges gratuities separately ($20 per day as of January 2026). Viking’s adults-only policy, no casino, and Heywood Hill library curation distinguish it for a specific kind of traveller. Emerald accepts children and has a more casual social atmosphere. On ocean, the Viking expedition ships are in a different category from Emerald’s warm-water yachts.
AmaWaterways
Best for: The most culinary-focused river cruise experience, with the widest range of active excursions and strong wine programme
AmaWaterways is the most direct pricing and size competitor to Emerald on European rivers. Both lines include multiple excursion types in the fare, both serve similarly sized ships, and both target a similar demographic. AmaWaterways has a stronger culinary identity with its Chef’s Table restaurant and twin balconies on many cabins. Emerald’s pool-to-cinema and opening balcony are distinctive design differentiators.
SeaDream Yacht Club
Best for: The most intimate ocean yacht experience with near one-to-one crew ratio, fully all-inclusive including premium spirits, and private anchorage access
At 112 guests with a 95-person crew, SeaDream is dramatically more intimate than Emerald’s 100 to 128-guest yachts and more comprehensively all-inclusive including premium spirits and watersports. It is not a direct competitor in the same price tier, but the right comparison for clients deciding between a boutique premium yacht and a genuinely ultra-intimate experience.
Who Emerald is best suited for
Emerald works best for a specific type of traveller on both the river and ocean sides of the product.
For river voyages, Emerald is ideal for couples and small groups who want a premium European river experience with a contemporary aesthetic and clear physical differentiation from mainstream lines. The pool-to-cinema is the most discussed feature among first-time guests and tends to be remembered long after the cruise ends. The three-tier excursion programme suits guests who want structure and quality in their shoreside time without being locked into a single pace. Guests who value the full all-inclusive model including spirits should consider Scenic or Viking instead.
For ocean voyages, Emerald Azzurra, Sakara, and Kaia are best suited to travellers who want warm-water Mediterranean or Caribbean boutique yachting with marina platform access, a relaxed social atmosphere, and genuinely small ship intimacy at a price point below ultra-luxury. The Owner’s Suite produces an experience close to ultra-luxury at a fraction of the price. Guests who want polar expedition capability, comprehensive all-inclusive beverages, or a sub-100-guest atmosphere will find better options elsewhere.
First-time river cruisers who want a clearly differentiated experience from mainstream river lines
Design-conscious couples who appreciate the Missoni textiles, contemporary interiors, and the boutique hotel aesthetic on both products
Travellers who want active options built into every port without paying extra for them
Warm-water yacht guests who want Mediterranean, Adriatic, or Caribbean intimacy with marina platform access at a premium rather than ultra-luxury price
Existing Emerald or Scenic river guests looking to extend the brand relationship into ocean travel
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Emerald Cruises and Scenic?
Both brands belong to Scenic Group, founded by Glen Moroney. Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours is the flagship ultra-luxury brand, offering a fully all-inclusive product including premium spirits, butler service on all cabins, and the Discovery Yacht expedition fleet with helicopters and submarine. Emerald Cruises is the accessible premium brand, positioned one price tier below Scenic, with a more contemporary and casual atmosphere, wine and beer included with meals rather than full all-inclusive beverages, and no expedition capability on the ocean yachts. Both share the same operational infrastructure, shipbuilding relationships, and commitment to small-ship quality.
What makes the Emerald Star-Ships different from other river cruise ships?
The most distinctive feature is the pool that converts into an evening cinema: a heated stern pool under a retractable glass roof that is covered and reconfigured with seating and a screen each evening. The opening balcony suites, where a full-height glass panel opens at waist level to convert the cabin into an indoor terrace, are the second key differentiator. These were features Scenic Group pioneered on European rivers and they remain the most visually and functionally distinctive design elements in the Emerald river fleet.
Are the ocean yachts fully all-inclusive?
No. Emerald’s ocean yachts include all meals with complimentary wine, beer, and soft drinks at lunch and dinner, Wi-Fi, port charges, gratuities, use of the marina platform and water toys, and included excursions on the voyage itinerary. Premium spirits, cocktails, spa treatments, and some optional excursions are charged separately. This is more inclusive than most premium ocean cruise lines but less comprehensive than the ultra-luxury standard of Scenic Eclipse, Seabourn, or Silversea.
What is Emerald Kaia and when does it launch?
Emerald Kaia is the third ocean yacht in the Emerald fleet, launching in April 2026 with an inaugural season through Cyprus, Greece, and Turkey. She carries 128 guests, slightly larger than the 100-guest Azzurra and Sakara, and incorporates improvements including a larger Sky Deck with private cabanas and a refined wellness area. She is the first of three new yachts arriving by 2028, alongside Emerald Raiya (2027) and Emerald Xara (2028), which will expand the ocean fleet to five yachts.
What are EmeraldPLUS and EmeraldACTIVE excursions?
EmeraldPLUS excursions are culturally immersive included experiences beyond the standard guided city tour: access to local homes, artisan workshops, private tastings, cooking demonstrations, and cultural performances. EmeraldACTIVE options are the active included alternatives: guided bike rides, hiking trails, and canoeing in destinations where the landscape allows it. Both are included in the cruise fare at no additional charge. DiscoverMORE excursions are the optional premium experiences available for an additional fee.
Who owns Emerald Cruises?
Emerald Cruises is a fully owned subsidiary of Scenic Group, the privately held Australian cruise and touring company founded in 1986 by Glen Moroney. Scenic Group is headquartered in Baar, Switzerland, and also operates Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours, the flagship ultra-luxury brand. Emerald Cruises is headquartered in Zug, Switzerland.
Plan your Emerald Cruise with ÆRIA Voyages
Every Emerald voyage is different depending on whether the product is a river Star-Ship or an ocean yacht, which waterway or destination region is the focus, and which stateroom category best matches the client’s priorities. I help clients navigate those choices: from understanding whether the opening balcony Panorama Suite or the entry Emerald Stateroom is the right match for their travel style, to selecting between a Mediterranean yacht itinerary and a Caribbean winter deployment, to comparing Emerald to Viking or Scenic for a European river voyage.
If you are curious about pricing, current availability, or whether Emerald is the right fit for your travel vision, I would be glad to talk it through.
